Carer Visa (Subclasses 116/836)

Overview

These visas allow you to move to and stay in Australia to provide long-term medical care for an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Both are permanent visas. The subclass 116 visa is for applicants who are outside Australia, whilst the 836 visa is for applicants who are inside Australia.

What You Can Do & How Long You Can Stay

Both these visas are permanent visas.
You can travel to and from Australia multiple times.
You can live, work and study in Australia whilst on this visa.
You can access Medicare whilst on this visa.
You can include your dependent child in your application.
You may be eligible for a Bridging Visa to remain in Australia while waiting for the subclass 836 visa to be processed.

Limitations and Important Things to Know

There is a substantial waiting period for these visas to be granted.
You may be refused this visa if a member of your family unit cannot meet health or character requirements, even if they are not accompanying you to Australia. This is known as the “One Fail, All Fail” rule.
Usually, you will not be eligible for a Bridging Visa to remain in Australia while waiting for the subclass 116 visa to be processed.
